| Administrative History | The south transept of Chester Cathedral served as the ancient parish church of St. Oswald, originally serving the townships of Bache, Churton Heath, Croughton, Great Boughton, Huntington, Iddinshall, Lea Newbold, Newton by Chester, Saighton and Wervin, and parts of Blacon cum Crabwall, Upton by Chester, and the City of Chester. St. Oswald’s closed in 1882, and the former chapel of St. Thomas of Canterbury (opened in 1871) became the new parish church. In 1967 the parish was united with Chester St. Little John, and between 1973 and 2005 it was part of a unified parish for the city of Chester. In 2005 the parish was renamed “St. Oswald & St. Thomas of Canterbury”. For later records see Bruera, Upton Holy Ascension, and the Chester parishes of Christ Church, St. Paul and St. Peter. |
